Specify geometry for cross sections

kevin
I am new to HEC-RAS, and just have a simple question regarding specifying the "station-elevation" for cross sections:

Is the "station" simply an x-coordinate within a cross section, or does it have to come from some 2D coordinate (like UTM)? Is there any requirement for the “station” among different cross sections? For example, does the station 0 in one cross section must be somehow in line with station 0 in another cross section?

Any hint is appreciated.

The station (x) is the distance measured from the start of the cross section on the left bank and there is no reference to upstream or downstream cross sections.

Thank you! That clears my doubts.
